He had been searching for answers and found a number of sites that described a system of making money called affiliate marketing. Typically, these sites promised to teach him how to create an affiliate marketing site for a surprisingly small fee – about $39 or so – considering how much money he could make. He read a number of inspiring and remarkable success stories about people who used the product. There was one person who had been diagnosed with cancer and could no longer go into the office until he discovered how to make money blogging. Now that person is cancer free and has made a fortune with the system that is described in the $39 product. Another blogger wrote about how he had lost his job and was at the end of his financial rope when he discovered affiliate marketing and now is living comfortably, working from his home with a view of the Pacific Ocean.
My friend was confused and overwhelmed by the information and maybe you are too. So let me help you separate these blogs from the ones those that teach you the discipline of using a blog to build your business or your brand. They are get rich quick schemes and the only people getting rich quick are the people selling thousands of $39 information packages.
There is no such thing as getting rich quick. Even if you are ready to plunk down $39 and listen to everything the e-book tells you to do. As my grandfather used to say, “If it sounds too good to be true it is too good to be true.”
Now, having said that, there are ways of building a lucrative business online. There are people who have done it and are making out quite well, starting with nothing more than a computer in the comfort of their own home. But they worked at it for years. They built up trust. They worked hard focusing on the needs of their customers, being generous with information and with praise for the people who influenced them. They demonstrated thought leadership. They spent many hours answering customer emails and comments. They put in more hours than you would ever think of putting in at a “regular job” every day.
Do people get rich through internet marketing? Yes. Not many. Those that do paid their dues. It wasn’t $39.
If you put the words “make money online” or “how to blog” into a search engine and found this post, it shows that a technique that people use to bring visitors to their site worked. There are techniques that you can learn to build an online business. There is a discipline to marketing online and there are principles that will help you build your business. But none of them work quickly and even if you build your business using mostly sweat equity it’s going to cost you more than $39.
